Answers for a lighter footprint
Useful starting points, with the conditions left in. For a particular product, follow its instructions and relevant local guidance.
How often should I sharpen garden tools?
Sharpen when performance and inspection show a need, using the method recommended for that tool. There is no universal interval; some blades need specialist servicing. Clean and check adjustment first, because a stiff pivot or misaligned blade can mimic a blunt edge. Read the sharpening routine.
Does rust mean a tool must be thrown away?
Not always. Light surface rust differs from deep corrosion or cracking at a stressed part. Retire or professionally assess equipment with uncertain structural safety. Cleaning away rust does not restore metal already lost or prove that a joint is sound. Check repair versus retirement.
Do I need a compost accelerator?
Usually, start by correcting the mix, moisture and air. An additive does not reliably fix a dry, compacted or unsuitable heap. Check the conditions inside the bin and change one thing at a time. Troubleshoot the symptoms.
Can compostable packaging go into my home heap?
Only if it is specifically suitable for home composting and the relevant guidance permits it. Industrial compostability is not the same as home compostability. Read the certification scope and check your local collection rules instead of relying on a leaf symbol. Read environmental claims carefully.
Must my compost heap get hot?
No. Cool composting can work more slowly, but should not be relied on to destroy weed seeds or pathogens. A small heap fed gradually may never sustain high temperatures. Use suitable materials and allow enough time for maturity. Build a manageable compost routine.
Is stored rainwater safe to drink?
No. Ordinary garden rainwater storage is non-potable and is not suitable for drinking, food preparation or handwashing. Keep it covered and secure. For edible crops, follow local health guidance and avoid splashing stored water onto edible portions, especially those eaten raw. Plan safe collection.
Will a smart irrigation timer always save water?
No. Savings depend on the previous practice, installation, settings, weather and maintenance. Check the soil and actual water use. A timer can operate a leaking or unnecessary system just as consistently as a well-designed one. Compare watering options.
Should I replace all plastic pots?
Keep sound pots in use when suitable. Replacement material alone does not establish a lower overall impact. Clean, store and inspect reusable pots, and use an appropriate local route when they are no longer serviceable. Start with what is already useful.
What makes an environmental claim useful?
A useful claim is specific about its scope, comparison and evidence, and explains important limits and disposal conditions. Check whether it describes the whole product or just one component. Words such as “green” or “natural” are not enough by themselves. Use the claim-checking questions.
Does the contact worksheet send my message?
No. It creates editable plain text locally. You choose whether to copy it, download it or send it through your own email app. Nothing entered in the worksheet is saved by its code or submitted to a server. Open the worksheet.
